Art

Prior to taking the course Art 110 I never really unfolded the definition of what exactly is art. To me the definition of art was something you can create such as a painting, drawing, or sculpture using paint or a pencil that has to be appealing to the eye. Since I never really understood the true meaning of art I never enjoyed it because in my opinion my work was never as good as my classmates. I was always overthinking how straight my lines were and never had fun with the concept given to me. Pushing myself to take this class was very important because I knew I would be venturing out of my comfort zone when it came to being artistic. Now during the end of the semester art to me now means an idea/thought brought to life utilizing creativity to inspire others. Art can be anything you want it to be and more, another person may view your artwork and have a different perspective than what you intended. There are no boundaries in making art, and it is unique to each individual.

I am a freshman at csulb and am currently undeclared. Art provides me with the opportunity to explore the wide variety of choices I have to choose from. One of my career goals is to find a career that I enjoy doing. I don’t wanna work my entire life and only have a few years to enjoy it, I wanna work in something that will fulfill me. This means I have the chance to express my inner creativity and learn more about my creative skills. Art gives me the chance to have a bit of fun and pushes me to think outside the box, to develop new skills and even possibly introduce me to a new career option. Not only has art made me more confident in expressing my ideas but it has enriched my point of view. Before finding the answer to “what is art?” I always just glanced at art, now I take time to absorb the beauty of an art piece.I attempt to unravel the message or purpose of the masterpieces and make connections to my ideas. Art has widened my perspective and I came to the realization that anyone can make art even myself. Such as artists like Bobbi Bosson who utilizes her determination to normalize the female body and fight against discrimination towards women. You can bring light to important social issues by making art ! I truly believe that art has benefited me with the confidence to express my creativity and to trust the process. Even though it may not be as appealing tome it is art to someone else. Art does not always have to be appealing as long as there is a more important message behind it. I don’t believe that this will be my last art class because art provides me with the freedom I don’t have in my other classes. I do as if I am more complete because my mind has been enriched with new perspectives and techniques that will expand my range of opportunities.

Art matters to those who see it’s potential. Those who see art and transform it into a much bigger thought. Anyone can just look at art but you won’t be inspired if you don’t open your mind to it and commit to acknowledging its beauty. I believe that art brings beauty to the simplest of things. It highlights the beauty we tend to fail to see on a daily basis. Life always seems so fast paced. Most importantly it matters because art is a way to capture a moment and have it stay still for a lifetime. With a painting or drawing you can capture the beauty of the moment and share it with the rest of the world so that they can have the same experience. Art does not compare to just taking a simple photo because it can be altered and modified such as photoshopping while as in art you can capture a moment and present it from your perspective. If all artists and artistic impulse would vanish from the earth I personally believe life would be so bland. Being artistic is what forces people out of a routine, having new experiences, viewing the world through new points of view. I feel that the artistic impulse is a necessity because without it life would be a simple boring routine. Artists bring thoughts and ideas to life to inspire others and spread their creativity.

I do believe that the slogan “a great nation deserves great art” by the NEA holds some truth because the way I see it is that “great art makes a great nation”. . Great art can only be enjoyed by a diverse nation. I believe that everyone should have the privilege to have an out of this world experience when viewing art. Art can be anything you can imagine. Anyone can create art and there are no limits. It can be complicated, busy, simple, basic, pale, vibrant, sad, happy but it will impact each individual in a unique way. The way you view art is based on your perspectives and mindsets. All these factors are what make up art. This semester I have learned to think outside the box and release my artistic impulse. I have always hated the fact that I didn’t know how to draw but I just had to collect my ideas and find the correct media to present it on. Art is something you just have to go for and not think too much about. Ideas are supposed to flow and brought to real life. Before ART110 I was confined to the idea that art can only be expressed through drawings and paintings but I now know that art can be expressed through many platforms and take on many shapes and forms. Anything can be art if you make it.
